A General, Laparoscopic, Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon, Dr Harish Kumar works at Cairns Private Hospital in addition to his private consulting rooms at Cairns Private Specialist Clinic.
For 10 years, Dr Harish Kumar led a large Bariatric Unit in the UK and served as a Consultant Specialist Surgeon for 12 years in the UK and Queensland prior to moving to Cairns. He was head of the surgical department for three years at Toowoomba Hospital.
Dr Kumar originally trained in the UK under the guidance of leading internationally renowned surgeons in the fields of keyhole and cancer surgery. The central focus was on advanced minimally invasive surgery and finding new and innovative techniques for treatment. Key-hole surgery for cancer treatment became a specialty field for Dr Harish Kumar.
His published works on molecular research regarding cancer development have featured in several highly reputed international journals. His passion for learning more drives him and his research continues to be published regularly in these journals.
He also enjoys spending time training and teaching Senior Fellows from Australasian and European countries.
Among his many specialisations, Dr Kumar’s fields of expertise include general surgery and endocrine surgery. His special interest is keyhole surgery for gallstone disease involving Bile Duct stones. He performs laparoscopic and open surgeries to treat Stomach, Large Bowel and Oesophageal cancers.
With a list of awards that includes MBBS, FRCS [ED], MD, MS, FRCS, MBA, FRACS, Dr Kumar is also an active member of many international academic associations including IFSO [International Federation for surgery for Obesity and Metabolic Disorders], SAGES, OSSANZ and ANZGOSA.
